Next BMW i Product to Follow i8 Roadster

The i5 SUV will reportedly be the Bavarian automaker’s next new electric model, but is not slated for debut until 2021.

Earlier this year, Harald Krüger, chairman of the board of management at BMW AG, unveiled that their next phenomenal car would be unveiled in 2021, calling it ‘i Next’. He described the fut ure model as the “new spearhead of innovation and technology”.

According to sources, the automaker has settled on an SUV bodystylebmw-i8-spyder-concept-780x584 for its next model, saying that it is a shape with global appeal in a segment with vibrant sales and higher profit margins than hatchbacks or saloons. Moreover, an SUV bodystyle easily houses the bulky battery pack without compromising proportions.

In a statement, Ian Robertson, BMW‘s head of sales and marketing, affirmed that the automaker was waiting until 2021 for its next big debut so it could take advantage of “the next big steps in electric motor, battery and autonomy”.

He noted that they are at the very early stages of i, but are already coming up to their 100,000th registration. He also added that just as with M, there are opportunities that take time to build up, from i cars to i Performance products to i kit, such as an electric scooter.

The lessons BMW learned from the i3 and i8 continue to give the automaker an edge over its competitors. Robertson concluded that the beauty of those cars is that they provide BMW with a competency in the field of electric cars and lightweight technology—not only in people, but in manufacturing too.

The automotive world is anticipating to see the i8 Roadster in 2018. No details have been given yet, but according to sources, it will share the powertrain of the coupé and closely reflect the i8 Roadster concept that was first launched in 2012.
