Mercedes Benz has two vehicles that have risen to top form in extreme terrain and have a dedicated fan base worldwide. The G Class adds to the passenger cars segment, and the Unimog falls under the commercial vehicles. Celebrations are in order as the Mercedes G Class completes 40 years in 2019, whereas the Unimog looks back on a tradition that spans for more than 70 years.
Both the Mercedes G-Class and the Mercedes Unimog are amongst those vehicles that whet the appetite for adventure and excite the childlike urge to play in every adult. Each vehicle has a character of their own and have been taking their own path for many decades.
The Mercedes G-Class and the Unimog have repeatedly proven their reliability and ability to take on any terrain at the Dakar Rally and other events. Both models share maximum robustness and durability, with which they fulfill any customer’s requirements.
“The G-Class has always stayed true to itself over the decades: from the edgy profile to the hallmark noise when the door is clanged shut”, says Peter Schoren, Head of G-Class Product Management and Sales. “At the same time, it has constantly evolved technologically. The current model is the best G-Class of all time in all aspects – regardless of whether we are talking about the comfort, the off-road capabilities or the agility on the road”.
The Unimog from Mercedes Benz is an off-road institution
Where the G-Class strikes as a lifestyle vehicle, the Unimog is a real workhorse. The Mercedes Unimog works conquers the grounds of Mount Etna in Sicily as a tourist shuttle and serves as a sea rescue vehicle for the German Maritime Search and Rescue service. The Unimog has been voted as off roader of the year in the “Special-Purpose Vehicles” for 15th time in a row.

The Mercedes four cylinder is set to give an output of up to
310kW which translates to 421 horsepower, the AMG 2.0 liter M139 engine has
been termed as the most powerful ending in the series production. With this
turbo charged engine, Mercedes-AMG has even exceeded the previously most
powerful M 133 by 30kW (41 hp). Affalterbach is the home where the new, highly
efficient powerpack is being produced on an innovative production line on the
“One Man, One Engine” principle.
The four-cylinder will be available in two output versions
that will ensure agile performance for the compact models: with a 421
horsepower for the S-model and a 387-horsepower engine in the base version. The
product policy logic is proven a success for the V8 powered AMG Performance
models, and also meets customer wishes.
The new engine gives an impressive immediate response along
with its performance figures. The torque has been carefully balanced at a peak
of 500 newton meters in the S model that is available in the range of 5000-5250
rpm and 480 nm of torque achieved at 4750-5000 rpm in the basic version. With
this configuration, the AMG engineers have achieved a power delivery similar to
that of a naturally aspirated engine. The engine development team were able to
improve agility when they realized a dynamically increasing torque curve in the
lower engine speed range. The engine is more free-revving with the increasing
torque at higher rpm. The m139 is confirmed as a sports engine as the high
maximum engine speed is up to 7200 rpm.
Emmerich Schiller, COO and member of the Board of Management
at Mercedes- AMG GmbH says “We have completely revised the principle of “One
Man, One Engine” for assembly of the M139. The result is to focus on the people
with an ultra-modern production. To achieve this, we created the ideal working
conditions in a bright, precisely organized and clean environment for our
employees. This provides the best basis for continuing to ensure our
high-quality level even as the technology becomes more complex,”
